Soooooooooo Close!

As I write this blog I am very excited about two things.  One is that I am heading to Maine for a much needed, in my opinion, vacation for a few days with Michelle.  A nice quite spot that we absolutely love.  The second thing that I am excited about is that I am only $157.06 away from reaching Heavy Hitter status in my first year of the PMC.  Here is the best part; that does not included the Flatbread Pizza Co donation from my last fundraiser.  Amazing I know!  I could not have done this with ALL of you!  Whether you made a donation, gave me a raffle prize, bought raffle tickets, gave me a cut of your restaurant proceeds, donated ALL of your proceeds from a day, ate dinner at a fundraiser night, bought granola, spices or coffee, or gave me good wishes and positive thoughts you ALL helped.  Just reading this blog helps.  You read and tell a friend and they read and tell a friend who reads and makes a donation.  That was YOU helping me out!  So THANK YOU!

Before I head out on vacation, I wanted to give you more statistics.  Not about me this time, but about the amazing work of The Jimmy Fund and Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

The Jimmy Fund:

  • Has been integral to the success of treatment for once-incurable childhood cancers for more than 60 years. Today, due in part to Dr. Sidney Farber’s groundbreaking work at Dana-Farber, overall cure rates for children’s cancers have reached more than 75 percent (and up to 90 percent for some forms of the disease).
  • Has raised more than $750 million since it was founded in 1948. More than 89 cents per dollar raised is directed toward Dana-Farber’s ultimate goal — eradicating cancer and related diseases, and the fear they engender.
  • Attracts tens of thousands who participate in more than 585 fundraising events each year. More than 4,000 volunteers help organize and support these events.
  • Is an official charity of the Boston Red Sox, as well as the official charity of the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge, the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, and the Variety Children’s Charity of New England.
  • Has earned nine consecutive 4-star ratings by Charity Navigator – a mark that less than one percent of rated charities achieve – demonstrating our ongoing fiscal excellence and ability to pursue and achieve long-term change.

The Jimmy Fund Clinic at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a place where children and their families find hope.

For people in New England and around the globe, the Jimmy Fund Clinic is one of the world’s premier centers for pediatric cancer research and treatment. Starting in the 1940s, when Institute founder Sidney Farber, M.D. used drug therapy to achieve the first-ever remissions of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Dana-Farber researchers have made strides against virtually every type of cancer that strikes children, from solid tumors that involve individual organs to those that affect blood or lymph.

The clinic is also a place where vintage Disney paintings adorn the walls, the waiting rooms are playrooms, and caring doctors and nurses provide expert and compassionate care for children with cancer.

Designed specifically for the comfort and convenience of pediatric cancer patients and their families, the Jimmy Fund Clinic follows Farber’s “total patient care” philosophy, assuring that a patient’s psychological, family and spiritual needs, as well as their medical needs, are met.

Through a unique and long-standing collaboration, Jimmy Fund Clinic patients receive inpatient care when needed at nearby Children’s Hospital Boston, the nation’s premier pediatric medical center.

So you are helping to do all of that.  100% of every dollar that I raise goes directly to The Jimmy Fund and Dana Farber.  Oh, and just because I am on the doorstep of Heavy Hitter does not mean that we are done fundraising.  Oh no!  We have one more event in the works.  Smiley’s in Dover, NH will be hosting my final PMC fundraiser on July 17th from 12-4.  There will be a BBQ, music, games for kids and a general great time for all.  If you don’t know Smiley’s you should; it’s the place to be!  I’m headed out for some good ‘ole fashion R&R in Maine but when I get back the wheels will hit the pavement again.  If you want to tag along for a training ride or just part of a training ride let me know.  I’d love to have some company!

Thanks again to ALL of you!
